A former UCLA water polo player has been indicted on charges of raping and sexually assaulting three women between October 2012 and last April.

Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, 19, of Glendale was charged in an eight-count indictment unsealed Monday by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. At least one of the alleged assaults occurred at a UCLA residence hall, according to officials.

Kaplanyan was arrested Friday by UCLA police, who had been investigating allegations against the former Glendale Hoover High standout since first arresting him last April.

Kaplanyan pleaded not guilty Monday. During a second court appearance, a judge set his bail at $590,000 and ordered that he surrender his passport.

Kaplanyan was originally arrested in April 2013 while a UCLA student. Afterward, campus police described one of the victims as an acquaintance of his who said the alleged rape occurred in a residence hall.

After the arrest, two other women reported they'd been sexually assaulted by himbetween Oct. 1, 2012, and Jan. 15, 2013, authorities said.

The prosecutor and a UCLA official declined to say whether all three alleged attacks occurred on campus.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Liliana Gonzalez said Kaplanyan faces one felony count each of forcible rape, false imprisonment by violence and possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct, and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery by restraint.

He also faces two felony counts each of sexual penetration by a foreign object and assault with intent to commit rape. The child pornography possession charge was unrelated to any of the alleged rape victims. According to the Feb. 25 indictment, the materials were discovered by authorities in late April 2013.

Gonzalez said in court Monday that the victims did not know one another and that the number of alleged crimes in a short time span showed the danger the defendant posed to the community.

At the time of Kaplanyan's initial arrest, his lawyers said he had been dating the accuser and that the two had had consensual sex.

Judge George G. Lomeli rejected an effort by an attorney for Kaplanyan to reduce bail. Attorney George Mgdesyan said his client was not a flight risk. He said the case against the former water polo star is weak, that any sexual interaction with the women was consensual and that there are text messages to support that statement.

If convicted of all charges, Kaplanyan faces 37 years and four months in state prison.
