Hey, hockey season's over. So guess who's hinting at a fresh alternative?
The Dodgers are quietly starting to act like they want to offer an interesting season of their own, albeit without all the double overtime and Game 7 victories.
Led by the pitching and hitting of Dan Haren, the Dodgers downed the Diamondbacks, 6-4, Saturday night before a Dodger Stadium crowd of 51,422.
The victory was their fifth of their last seven games, and aided by the suddenly stumbling Giants, they are making something of a mini-move in the National League West.
The Dodgers started the week 9 1/2 games back of the Giants in the National League West. But with the Giants losing five of their last six, the Dodgers now find themselves 6 1/2 back.
Still disappointing for a team with a record payroll, but that's a decent improvement over the course of one week.
The Dodgers were briefly in trouble Saturday when Haren gave up a two-run homer to Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning, but the Dodgers countered with a slugger of their own in the third when Dee Gordon hit a two-run homer of his own two rows into the right-field seats near the Arizona bullpen. It was his second homer of the season.
The Diamondbacks regained the lead in the fourth on three singles, but the Dodgers scored four times in the bottom of the inning.
Yasiel Puig opened with his second walk of the night off Josh Collmenter and was singled to third by Adrian Gonzalez. Matt Kemp punched a single to left to score Puig with the tying run. Andre Ethier bounced out to first to advance the runners, and A.J. Ellis was intentionally walked to load the bases.
It appeared the strategy would work when Miguel Rojas flied out shallow right to bring up Haren.
But Haren, who was batting .115 and had driven in one run all season, stunned Collmenter by lining a bases-clearing double on one bounce to the center-field wall.
Haren (7-4) ended up going 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
The Diamondbacks had won seven of Collmenter's last nine starts, but in six innings Saturday he was charged with six runs on eight hits and three walks.
J.P Howell and Brian Wilson held the Diamondbacks scoreless until Kenley Jansen took over in the ninth. Jansen gave up a leadoff home run to Martin Prado, but then retired the Diamondbacks in order to earn his 19th save.
The Dodgers are 10-3 against the Diamondbacks this season.
