KEY MOMENT: With the bases loaded in the sixth inning and the Angels trailing by a run, Howie Kendrick blooped a two-run single to right field for a 3-2 lead, and Brennan Boesch followed with an RBI fielder's choice for a 4-2 lead.

AT THE PLATE: The Angels used a pair of productive outs in the second, Erick Aybar leading off with a double to left, taking third on Kendrick's sacrifice bunt and scoring on Boesch's sacrifice fly to center. The Phillies tied the score in the third when Jimmy Rollins singled, stole second and third and scored on Marlon Byrd's single. They took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Carlos Ruiz singled, took second on Cody Asche's sacrifice bunt and scored on Rollins' single to right.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver looked wobbly through four innings, giving up two runs and eight hits and walking two, and through three innings his pitch count stood at 66. But he found his footing in the fifth, retiring the last six batters he faced before yielding to Kevin Jepsen, who allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh. Joe Smith gave up a run in the eighth on Grady Sizemore's triple and Domonic Brown's RBI groundout.

SKAGGS SURGERY: Tyler Skaggs underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, and Manager Mike Scioscia said he was told by the team's medical staff that "everything went as expected; it went very well." Of course, the success of the elbow reconstruction surgery won't be fully measured until Skaggs goes through the grueling rehabilitation process, which takes 12 to 18 months, and returns to the mound in the spring of 2016.

REHAB REPORT: Utility man Grant Green (lumbar strain) is scheduled to begin taking batting practice this weekend in Arizona, and he expects to begin a minor league stint next week. … Reliever Mike Morin (cut on his left foot) is scheduled to throw for Class-A Inland Empire on Thursday and be activated Saturday in Texas. … Left-hander Joe Thatcher (left-ankle sprain) will join Green in Arizona but appears several weeks away from a return.

UP NEXT: The Angels are off Thursday. Right-hander Garrett Richards (12-4, 2.54 ERA) will oppose Texas right-hander Nick Martinez (2-8, 5.22 ERA) at Globe Life Park on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
