Jimmy Butler made a surprise return to the starting lineup and made two free throws with 0.2 seconds left to help the visiting Chicago Bulls weather another absence from Derrick Rose in a 106-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

Butler scored 24 points on six-for-12 shooting in his season debut and Pau Gasol added 29 points and six rebounds for the Bulls, who were without Rose because of a sprained left ankle.

Kevin Martin scored 33 points and hit a three-pointer for a 105-104 lead with 2.9 seconds to play. But Butler got rookie Andrew Wiggins in the air on the other end and forced contact to get to the line. He knocked down the free throws, and the Bulls escaped with the win.

at Oklahoma City 102, Denver 91: Perry Jones and Serge Ibaka each scored 23 points to help the short-handed Thunder earn its first victory of the season. The Thunder, already without MVP Kevin Durant for at least a month with a broken right foot, announced that Russell Westbrook had successful surgery on his broken right hand Saturday morning and also will miss at least a month.

Dallas 109, at New Orleans 104: Chandler Parsons scored 20 points and the Mavericks won their second in a row. Anthony Davis had 31 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks for the Pelicans, who erased a 17-point deficit and led by four early in the fourth quarter.

Memphis 71, at Charlotte 69: Marc Gasol scored 22 points, Zach Randolph had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and the Grizzlies got off to their first 3-0 start. The Hornets' big free-agent acquisition, Lance Stephenson, scored two points and didn't play in the fourth quarter.

Toronto 108, at Orlando 95: DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points, Kyle Lowry added 21 and the Raptors beat the Magic for the eighth straight time. The Raptors held the Magic to 35.8% shooting in the final quarter and put all five starters in double figures to win their second in a row.

Miami 114, at Philadelphia 96: Chris Bosh had 30 points and eight rebounds to lead the Heat to its second victory in a row, dropping the 76ers to 0-3. Mario Chalmers scored 18 points and Dwyane Wade had nine points and 10 assists for Miami.

at Washington 108, Milwaukee 97: Paul Pierce was ejected before halftime in his first home game with the Wizards, and Otto Porter picked up the slack with a career-high 21 points. Starting the third quarter in place of Pierce, second-year forward Porter — essentially a non-factor as a No. 3 overall draft pick as a rookie — scored 19 points in the second half.

at Atlanta 102, Indiana 92: Jeff Teague scored 25 points, Al Horford added 20 and the Hawks won their home opener with President Jimmy Carter and rap star T.I. among the sellout crowd.

Brooklyn 102, at Detroit 90: Joe Johnson scored 15 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter as the Nets picked up their first win. The Pistons (0-3) got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Greg Monroe, who was making his season debut after a two-game suspension for a drunk-driving arrest, but they went one for 17 on three-pointers.

at Houston 104, Boston 90: James Harden had 26 points and eight rebounds, and the Rockets jumped to a 15-point lead after one quarter and cruised past the Celtics. Harden made only five of 14 shots from the field, but he was 14 of 14 from the free-throw line. He also had six assists.

at Utah, 118, Phoenix 91
