Five Arizona high school students have been arrested and charged with conspiring to kill a classmate, Tucson police said Thursday.
Investigators from the Tucson Police Department descended on Flowing Wells High School in northern Tucson on Wednesday after a student tipped off school officials to the plan, authorities said.
Detectives collected evidence at the school and conducted interviews, police said, and determined that the group intended to target a student "that they were having problems with" and that the plan was "not a random act of violence."
The five suspects – Christopher Gibson, 18; Anastasia Lakin, 17; Jessica Good, 17; Gabriel Quiroga, 15; and Andrew Totten, 15 – were arrested at school Wednesday. They were charged Thursday with one count each of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. The Times does not typically name suspects who are minors, but Lakin, Good, Quiroga and Totten have been charged as adults.
Over the last week, the teens met on multiple occasions to discuss their plot to kill the male classmate, who is also a minor and had formerly been part of their social circle, said police spokesman Sgt. Pete Dugan.
"Recently there's been some kind of falling out in the group, and they decided to go after him," Dugan told The Times. "The five of them would get together and talk about how they were going to do this, where it's going to take place, what means they were going to use … exactly when it's going to happen."
Dugan said Gibson brought a knife to school, which he said school staff found in his possession Wednesday.
Gibson is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, and bail for the rest of the defendants has been set at $25,000 each, according to records with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. They are being held at the Pima County Jail.
Police say they are confident that the student who told school officials about the plan is not involved. They say they have arrested all of the people involved in the case, but encourage anyone with information to come forward.
