Former 49ers and Raiders offensive tackle Kwame Harris has been arrested in San Francisco after police say he was involved in two hit-and-run collisions, fell asleep while his car was still running and attempted to bite a police officer's hand.
About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police found Harris, 33, unconscious behind the wheel near 14th Street and South Van Ness Avenue, said San Francisco police Officer Carlos Manfredi. The vehicle's engine was on and it was parked about halfway into a chained-off driveway.
Harris "appeared to be in an altered mental status" and "did not comply with officers' demands," Manfredi said. Medical professionals were called to the scene because Harris was suspected of being under the influence of drugs.
When police attempted to handcuff him, Harris tried to bite one of the officer's hands, Manfredi said. Officers eventually subdued him and took him into custody.
Harris was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and driving under the influence of drugs, but police later linked him to two separate hit-and-run incidents that occurred earlier in the day.
The former football star is believed to have crashed into a silver luxury sedan near Hyde Street and Broadway before striking a recreational vehicle in the 1700 block of Harrison Street, Manfredi said.
According to jail records, Harris posted bail Monday.
Harris, the 26th overall selection in the 2003 NFL draft, was a star at Stanford University. He played 86 NFL games, first for the 49ers and later for the Raiders, before retiring after the 2008 season.
He was convicted in 2013 of misdemeanor domestic violence and battery for beating his ex-boyfriend.
